Introduction

The Metisse is a virtual server X called Xwnc, a special version of FVWM and Fvwm Amestita. The Metisse is a free software developed under a GNU license (the license GNU).

The Xwnc it’s the junction of Xvnc and Xdarwin. Its functioning is similar to Xvnc, however with different protocol. The OpenGl is used via central library to render the Mdesktop on the window, thus obtaining a 3D acceleration in the X server.

Download and Installation and Running

The download and the installation from the sources can be effected through the do*****entation in the following link: http://insitu.lri.fr/~chapuis/metisse/download_install.html.

The Metisse is dependent on the package wm-icons and the center library (http://insitu.lri.fr/~chapuis/software/metisse/nucleo-0.1-20040721.tar.bz2). Therefore, its installation must be carried out in our system.

For the users who do not like to compile sources, there are the rpm packages in the following links for download:

metisse-0.3.3-2.FC1.i386.rpm : Graphical interface

http://www.fedoranews.com/tchung/metisse/0.3.3/FC1/metisse-0.3.3-2.FC1.i386.rpm

wm-icons-0.3.0-1.FC1.i386.rpm : Icons

http://fedoranews.org/tchung/metisse/requirements/wm-icons/FC1/wm-icons-0.3.0-1.FC1.i386.rpm

nucleo-0.1-1.FC1.i386.rpm : Central library

http://fedoranews.org/tchung/metisse/requirements/nucleo/FC1/nucleo-0.1-1.FC1.i386.rpm

xv-3.10a-1053.6.i586.rpm : Visualization of image

http://www.lll.lu/Images/LLL-9.1/suse/i586/xv-3.10a-1053.6.i586.rpm

After download, install the packages in the sequence shown below:

linux:/home/cabelo/Do*****ents/metisse # rpm -ivh nucleo-0.1-1.FC1.i586.rpm

A preparar... ########################################### [100%]

1:nucleo ########################################### [100%]

linux:/home/cabelo/Do*****ents/metisse #

linux:/home/cabelo/Do*****ents/metisse # rpm -ivh wm-icons-0.3.0-1.FC1.i386.rpm

A preparar... ########################################### [100%]

1:wm-icons ########################################### [100%]

linux:/home/cabelo/Do*****ents/metisse #

linux:/home/cabelo/Do*****ents/metisse # rpm -ivh metisse-0.3.3-2.FC1.i386.rpm

A preparar... ########################################### [100%]

metisse ########################################### [100%]

linux:/home/cabelo/Do*****ents/metisse #

The 75 and 100 dpi sources for the Xserver should be installed and be found in /usr/lib/X11/fonts.

Although software xv is not indispensable for the functioning of the Metisse, we will use it to insert an image as wall paper.

linux:/home/cabelo/Do*****ents/metisse # rpm -ivh xv-3.10a-1053.i386.rpm

A preparar... ########################################### [100%]

1:xv ########################################### [100%]

linux:/home/cabelo/Do*****ents/metisse #

To execute the Metisse we recommend a plate with 3D acceleration resources. And most important, we will assume that your video plate is configured correctly.

We must run the Xwnc to begin the Metisse session. For this purpose, in a basic session X run the commands below:

Xwnc -ac -geometry linhaxcoluna :display

Example:

# Xwnc -ac -geometry 1024x768 :0 &

# metisse-session

Nesta fase, teremos a seguinte tela:

In this phase, we will have the following screen:

http://www.netitec.com.br/linux/images/metisse-12.jpg

The metisse-session command initiates the Metisse interface, and a screen similar to the illustration below will be displayed:

http://www.netitec.com.br/linux/images/metisse-23.jpg

As a standard the Metisse presents a all square-lined wallpaper. The important detail is the taskbar to show in the lower part of the monitor. If it is there, congratulations, the Metisse is already installed in your Linux system.

As I did not configure the session of the Metisse to initiate automatically, I created the following script called 3D-Desktop:

# vi 3D-Desktop

And I inserted the following contents:

Xwnc -ac -geometry 1024x768 :1&

metisse-session

A new concept in operation:

I will be as objective as possible so that this do*****ent does not become very long. Click with the mouse left button on desktop to reach the main menu.

http://www.netitec.com.br/linux/images/metisse-08.jpg

Run any program of you preference with the purpose of presenting the functionalities and operation with the windows. In the example below run xterm.

http://www.netitec.com.br/linux/images/metisse-22.jpg

Icons Definition

1- Menu of operations with windows

2- Rotation of the window in axle Z.

3- Rotation of the window in axle X.

4- Rotation of the window in axle Y

5- Minimize the window.

6- Maximize the window

In the example below the windows haverotated in axle Y.

http://www.netitec.com.br/linux/images/metisse-19.jpg

We can also minimize the window using the keyboard key CTRL+SHIFT+I, generating a three-dimensional animation with effect of Zoom In/Out effect.

http://www.netitec.com.br/linux/images/metisse-20.jpg

To visualize the content behind the window, just click on one of the corners and pull as if it were a sheet of paper.

http://www.netitec.com.br/linux/images/metisse-21.jpg

Another way of visualizing existing objects behind the window is qualifying the transparency by clicking CTRL+SHIFT+t (keyboard key).

http://www.netitec.com.br/linux/images/metisse-24.jpg

When resizing a window, we can define if it becomes transparent during the operation in Menu AMESTISTA CONFIG -> CONFIGURATION -> RESIZA TRANSPARENCY.

http://www.netitec.com.br/linux/images/metisse-04.jpg

The type of the panel we define in menu AMESTISTA CONFIG -> CONFIGURATION- > PANEL CONFIG:

http://www.netitec.com.br/linux/images/metisse-06.jpg

A curvature effect towards the desktop background and its type can be defined

Enter in AMETHYST CONFIG -> CONFIGURATION -> SURFACE CURVATURE. Then, define the type of curvature in AMETHYST CONFIG -> CONFIGURATION -> SURFACE ROTATION.

http://www.netitec.com.br/linux/images/metisse-06.jpg

The operations with windows can be run by pressing the first icon of the head bar of the window. A menu will be displayed where each one of the options corresponds to an action of the current window.

http://www.netitec.com.br/linux/images/metisse-10.jpg

http://www.netitec.com.br/linux/images/metisse-11.jpg

Configuration files

The Metisse configuration files are found in $HOME/.fvwm-metisse. I will describe the main files briefly.

DESKS: This file contains configurations about the desktops; in the example below I configured the Metisse to work only with 2 desktops.

# ---------------------------------------------------------------------------

# Desk Config

# ---------------------------------------------------------------------------

SetEnv FVWM_NUMBER_OF_DESK 2

# must be $FVWM_NUMBER_OF_DESK - 1

SetEnv FVWM_LAST_DESK 3

DesktopSize 1 1

DestroyMenu AMenuWinOpsMoveToDesk

AddToMenu AMenuWinOpsMoveToDesk "Move To ..." Title

PipeRead 'i=0; while test 1 == `expr "(" ${i} "<" $[FVWM_NUMBER_OF_DESK] ")"`;

do echo "DesktopName $i $[gt.Desk] $i";

echo "+ "$[gt.Desk] ${i}" MoveToDesk 0 ${i}";

let i=${i}+1;

done'

BACKGROUND: This file configures the desktops wallpaper:

DestroyModuleConfig FvwmBacker: *

*FvwmBacker: Command (Desk 0)

Exec exec xsetroot -mod 4 4 -fg rgb:54/6/6 -bg grey20

*FvwmBacker: Command (Desk 1)

Exec exec xsetroot -mod 4 4 -fg grey20 -bg rgb:00/0B/4F

*FvwmBacker: Command (Desk 2)

Exec exec xsetroot -mod 4 4 -fg grey20 -bg rgb:4F/00/0C

*FvwmBacker: Command (Desk 3)

Exec exec xsetroot -mod 4 4 -fg grey20 -bg rgb:0A/4D/00

DestroyFunc AFuncSetBackground

AddToFunc AFuncSetBackground

+ I AFuncRestartModule FvwmBacker

To define in desktop 0 a paper of solid wall blue color, we used the following syntax:

*FvwmBacker: Command (Desk 0)

Exec exec xsetroot -solid rgb:00/00/ff

To define in desktop 0 a .jpg as wall paper, we used the following syntax:

*FvwmBacker: Command (Desk 0)

Exec exec xv -root -quit -maxpect /neti/parede/melhor.jpg

Conclusion:

There are countless configurations and resources available so that it would be necessary to write a book to explain all the procedures. However, I think that this do*****entation provides an initial contact with the Metisse. The remainder will depend on the user. The most important thing is that we, from the Linux community, can already try this trend in graphical interface.
