My CD/DVD RW is not reading or writing. This seems
to be OS independent, i.e., I could not boot a live
CD (which occurs during the BIOS).

Before I buy a new one, are there anything I can do
to check it out? I.e., anything I can fiddle with
in the BIOS, or take PC apart and fiddle with the
CD/DVD drive? I want to be sure it's a hardware
problem before buying a new one.

Thank in advance for any help.

Thank for all the tips. I am convinced that the problem is
reading/writing CDs, but not DVD.

Here's what I tried so far.

From BIOS
1. live CD boot ubuntu 5.10 (worked long ago; CD is free disk from ubuntu)
FAILED

2. DVD boot Mandriva 2006 installation disk
WORKED

3. DVD boot CentOS 4.4 installation disk
WORKED

From Mandriva 2006
4. read backup CD (Taiyo-Yuden CD-Rs, a 5-stars disk; worked long ago)
FAILED

5. added a game from Mandriva 2006 DVD installation disk
WORKED

I haven't opened the box. Probably not a connection or len problem
since this drive works fine for DVDs.

Any tip about making this drive works with CDs? Or is this
drive gone bad for CDs?

I'm not aware I added anything. The problem occurred when
I was playing a CD (music).

Fyi, I decided the DVD part still works (I even burned a DVD
yesterday) so the drive is not worth replacing. Instead I'm
opting for an external USB CD/DVD burner, then I can freely
go back and forth between desktop and laptop.

Thank for your comments.

A quick check: Are you ejecting the CD correctly? Don't
know which file manager you are using, but for most I used,
right-click the CD/DVD icon and choose eject. Do NOT click the button on the CD/DVD drive if you can help it (otherwise
you plan to reboot).

If that is not the problem, try the drive on another machine
and see if you get the same symptoms. If so, you probably
have a hardware problem. In my case, I brought a new drive.
You probably end up do so too - not worth fixing.
