Posted: Tue Feb 03, 2009 3:19 pm Post subject: Rosegarden Music
I play a lot of music, with my band and in private.
I even have a few songs to my name. But what I've always wanted to do is to write down the score to them using computer software. I looked around and found that this program "Rosegarden" seemed to fit the bill. So I install it start it up full of anticipation to get going and I get this error message:
Failed to connect to JACK audio server.
Rosegarden could not connect to the JACK audio server. This probably means the JACK server is not running.
If you want to be able to play or record audio files or use plugins, you should exit Rosegarden and start the JACK server before running Rosegarden again.
So I think to myself "Oh great, now what?" and click okay hoping that it won't mean anything. No such luck.
I then get an error message that says:
System timer resolution is too low
Rosegarden was unable to find a high-resolution timing source for MIDI performance.
You may be able to solve this problem by loading the RTC timer kernel module. To do this, try running sudo modprobe snd-rtctimer in a terminal window and then restarting Rosegarden.
Alternatively, check whether your Linux distributor provides a multimedia-optimized kernel. See http://rosegarden.wiki.sourceforge.net/Low+latency+kernels for notes about this.
I click okay again and finally get to the actual program interface.
I play around with it a bit (the command icons being fairly straightforward) and attempt to play it. What I heard when I finally hit the "play" button was the rushing sound of my computer's cooling system, birds and cars outside the window and the creaking of my office chair, but no music coming from the speakers.
I would greatly appreciate any solutions anyone has to offer on this little dilemma. And I'd also take it as a kindness if the answers were written in an English I can understand, i.e. not too advanced Linux-Technical language.
Thanks in advance,
the Whacky Nephew
