Linux Knowledge Base and Tutorial FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)
Category: Main -> Submitting Material
Answer | · What do I get out of submitting material? Remember that the Internet community (particularly the Linux and Open Source communities) survive by the contributions of its members. Although I can program well enough to do my job as a system administrator (mostly perl and shell scripts), I cannot really program well enough to make a significant contribution to any programming project. Since I am a writer, my contribution is my writing, which I am making available to you on my site.
Like me, many other people in the Internet community cannot program well enough to contribute to a development project. Instead, we contribute in any other ways, such as helping people learn about Linux, the Internet and computers, in general. This we do in the form of HOWTOs, user documentation and sites like this.
What you get out of submitting material is that you have helped enrich the Internet community. Plus you give back to the community that has already provided you with so much. Furthermore, the site allows you to publish your material along-side an already established and published author (me!). This could be the beginning of your own writing career. As a matter of fact, more than one contributor to the Linux Tutorial has later been published elsewhere. [ Back to Top ]
| · How do I submit new articles, new links and other information? Submissions of all kinds are always welcome. Entire articles, a couple of paragraphs as an addition to existing material, "Did you know?" tidbits and even new questions for the quizzes can be contributed any time.
If you come across an empty "More Information" page and have some links yourself please let me know, telling me the URL of the page(s) or the subject area where you think this information should/could be added. Because of the system I am using, I can make changes like that fairly quickly. Typically, I make these kinds of changes before I reply and thank you for your suggestions. In that way, you can immediately see that your suggestions are really valuable to me. Keep them coming! PLEASE! Obviously, larger contributions, such as articles, take longer to incorporate into the site.
If you would like to contribute to the Internet community, but don't have a site of your own or your site is not necessarily appropriate to what you would like to contribute, just use the same form. I really need people to provide some new material. In addition to expanding existing topics, there are many areas that I have not even touched on. I am trying to develop some ideas for automatic/dynamic page generation. With the exception of the actual content, the structure of each page is the same. That would make automating it pretty straight forward. If you have ideas on this send, you should also use the same feedback form. [ Back to Top ]
| · On what subject(s) should I contribute material? I welcome articles on any topic I discuss on my site or anything that might be related. The primary goal is to teach people Linux. Even if it may not fit in the main tutorial, it definitely would fit in the forums.
If you would like to make editorial contributions, such as checking the site for mistakes or providing updates to the information, I would really appreciate that, as well. I am constantly updating this site, so if you would like me to address something I haven't, yet, you can also use the feedback form and make a suggestion. I will then do my best to include it. | · If I submit an article, what happens with the copyright? Essentially, nothing. You will maintain any and all rights to any material you provide and of course you will get due credit for your work. Since most of my material has already been published once, I would like to eventually get the new material published, as well. Any contractual agreement necessary will be made before the material is published, but you will obviously get appropriate compensation and credit for your material. [ Back to Top ]
| · What other things should I consider when providing content? The best place to start for that answer is the Writer's Guide. If this does not answer all you questions, let me know and I will update it. [ Back to Top ]
